The table above gives life expectancy by age for men and women in the United States, from birth to 119, using the Social Security Administration’s 2023 period life table. For each age it shows how many more years people of that age live on average, the average age they reach, and the chance of living to 80, 90 and 100. Type an age to highlight its row, choose men or women, narrow the ages shown, or tap a column heading to sort. It is part of how the maths works.

How to read life expectancy by age

Life expectancy at a given age is an average over everyone who has reached that age. It is not the same number as life expectancy at birth with your age taken off. At birth the table gives 75.8 years for boys and 81.1 for girls, but a man who has reached 65 has 18.1 more years on average, to about 83. He has already come through the risks of the earlier decades, so the average age he can expect to reach is higher.

The “Years left” column is that average. “Expected age” adds it to the age in the row. The “Reach” columns are the share of people of that age and sex who live to 80, 90 or 100 under the table’s death rates. A dash means the row’s age has already passed that milestone.

The notation

Actuaries write the one-year death rate at age xx as Death probability qₓThe chance that someone aged exactly x dies before reaching x + 1, read from the life table. How it works: Life tables, and the life table’s count of survivors at exact age xx out of 100,000 births as Survivors lₓIn a life table, the number of people still alive at exact age x out of a starting group (100,000 at birth in SSA tables). How it works: Life tables. The chance that someone aged xx is still alive tt years later is Survival probability ₜpₓThe chance that someone aged x is still alive t years from now.How it works: Survival probability, and complete life expectancy, the average remaining lifetime counting part years, is Complete life expectancy e̊ₓThe average number of years still to live for someone aged x, counting part years. The ring marks the complete version. How it works: Life expectancy. The ring over the e marks the complete version. The curtate version, Curtate life expectancy eₓThe average number of whole years still to live for someone aged x. It is about half a year less than the complete figure. How it works: Life expectancy, counts whole years only and is about half a year shorter. See how life tables work for where each column comes from.

The formulas

The chance of reaching a milestone age AA is the product of the yearly survival chances on the way, which is also the ratio of survivors in the table:

A−xpx=∏j=0A−x−1(1−qx+j)=lAlx{}_{A-x}p_{x} = \prod_{j=0}^{A-x-1} \left(1 - q_{x+j}\right) = \frac{l_{A}}{l_{x}}

The chance that someone aged xx lives to age AA. More on survival probability.

Remaining life expectancy adds up the expected time lived in each future year, assuming deaths are spread evenly through each year of age:

e˚x=∑k≥0kpx(1−12 qx+k)\mathring{e}_{x} = \sum_{k \ge 0} {}_{k}p_{x} \left(1 - \tfrac{1}{2}\,q_{x+k}\right)

The average number of years still to live at age xx. Our figures match the SSA’s printed life expectancy at every age, to the two decimal places it prints. More on life expectancy.

Worked example: life expectancy of a 70-year-old woman

The table’s death rate for a woman aged 70 is 0.01477. Working through every later age gives her 16.8 more years on average, to about age 87.

Her chance of reaching 80 can be checked by hand from the survivors column. Of 100,000 girls born, the table has 82,374 alive at 70 and 64,606 alive at 80. Dividing gives 0.7843, a 78% chance. The same calculation gives a 37% chance of reaching 90 (about 4 in 10) and 3.3% of reaching 100.

What percentage of 60-year-olds live to be 80?

On the 2023 table, 60% of 60-year-old men live to 80 (about 6 in 10) and 71% of 60-year-old women (about 7 in 10). Select age 60 in the table and read the “Reach 80” column for each sex.

Life expectancy of a 75-year-old man

A man aged 75 has 11.4 more years on average, to about 86, and a 30% chance of reaching 90.

How long can a 95-year-old live?

At 95 the averages are short: 2.8 more years for men and 3.2 for women. The chance of reaching 100 from 95 is 16% for men and 22% for women. Above 119 the SSA stops printing rates; we hold the last rate constant, which reproduces the SSA’s printed figures at the oldest ages.

Men and women

Women have more years left than men at every age up to 109, where the table’s rates for the two sexes meet, but the gap narrows with age: 5.3 years at birth and 2.5 years at 65. Part of the difference at birth comes from higher death rates among young men, which no longer count once a man has reached 65.

Period, not cohort

These are period figures. Each row uses the death rates observed in 2023 at every age, as if they never changed. Death rates have tended to fall over time, so most people alive today will probably live somewhat longer than the table shows. A cohort table, which projects future improvements for people born in a given year, gives higher figures. The table also averages over the whole population, so it cannot reflect anyone’s own health. To see the same figures for yourself, or for a couple, use the life expectancy calculator.

Questions

Why does life expectancy go up as you get older?

Remaining years go down with age, but the age you can expect to reach goes up. Everyone in the row for age 80 has already come through the risks of the years before 80, so the average age at death for that group is higher than the average for people at 60, some of whom will die before 80.

Is this the same as the IRS life expectancy table?

No. The IRS tables in Publication 590-B are set for required minimum distributions from retirement accounts. They are unisex and built on a different mortality basis, so their factors differ from this table. Use the IRS tables for distribution rules and this table to understand population survival.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the period life table published by the Office of the Chief Actuary at the Social Security Administration, which gives the chance of dying within a year at every age for men and women. We calculate remaining years and the chance of reaching each age from those rates and check them against the SSA's printed life expectancy.

How often is the table updated?

The SSA publishes a new period life table each year alongside the Social Security Trustees Report. When a new edition comes out we add it as a new dated file, rerun the checks against the printed figures, and update this page and its date.
